Alice Kresse’s chosen medium is the monoprint, which is process somewhere between painting and printmaking, A monoprint (or monotype) allows the freedom of the former but the structure of the latter. As the name implies, each print is an edition of one. She works serially on an etching press generating “families” of semi abstract prints that include symbols, letter forms, textiles and found objects as stencils. As a series develops with multiple passes through the press; color changes, intensifies or fades; imagery is added and subtracted. A series can be as few as two unique prints or as many as twenty six (to date.)
Alice began incorporating collage and collagraph techniques into her work during the Covid19 pandemic. Loss of print shop access, an abundance of unsuccessful prints, and a desire to keep working drew her to make collages. Some of the more dimensional assemblages were lacquered and reused as collagraph plates for further printing.
Some recent series have been assembled into quilt like structures and accordion books.
